Liposuction for lipedema is now covered by health insurance!

Lipoedema – when pain and heaviness burden everyday life

Lipoedema is a chronic disease that almost exclusively affects women. It is a disorder of fat distribution in which abnormally altered fatty tissue accumulates mainly on the legs and/or arms – usually symmetrically. The hands, feet and upper body are typically spared.

From 2026, health insurance will cover the costs of liposuction if other conservative methods have failed for 6 months.

Liposuction is a tried and tested method that not only eliminates fat, but also relieves the affected region and the cardiovascular system, as the useless deposits are no longer supplied with blood for nothing.

Typical symptoms of lipedema:

Feeling of tension and heaviness in the affected areas of the body
Sensitivity to pressure and pain, independent of movement
Bruising (bruising) at the slightest touch
Disproportionate body shapes, e.g. slim upper body and strong legs

Despite physical activity and a healthy diet, the affected areas do not lose weight – this can lead to frustration and emotional stress.

Why lipoedema must be taken seriously

Lipoedema is more than just a cosmetic problem. It is a recognized chronic disease with real disease value. In advanced stages, it can lead to restrictions in everyday life, pain, joint problems and even so-called lipo-lymphoedema – an additional impairment of the lymphatic system.

Treatment options

Therapy is individualized – depending on the stage and symptoms. These include

Manual lymphatic drainage for decongestion
Compression treatment (e.g. flat-knit stockings)
Exercise therapy and a balanced diet
Liposuction (liposuction) for medical indications

Detected early – better treatable

The earlier lipoedema is diagnosed, the better the symptoms can be alleviated and the progression of the disease slowed down.

It should not be confused with lipomatosis!

Lipomatosis – many benign fatty tumors

Lipomatosis is a disease in which multiple lipomas (benign fat nodules) form in the body. These lumps consist of normal fatty tissue and are usually located under the skin.

Typical are:

Soft, easily movable lumps under the skin
Usually painless
Vary in size
Often irregularly distributed, e.g. on the back, shoulders, stomach
Not hormone-dependent. Affects men and women regardless of age

Lipomatosis is not usually dangerous, but can be disturbing or cosmetically unpleasant. Removal may be advisable in cases of discomfort or rapid growth.
