Ear Pinning Surgery (Otopexy) – Naturally Flowing Ears
Protruding ears are a common congenital variation. Many people find them bothersome or feel self-conscious because of them. Otoplasty is a proven, minimally invasive surgical procedure that harmonizes the shape of the ear and brings the auricle closer to the head.
At our practice, treatment is tailored to each individual, as every ear is shaped differently. Depending on the anatomical situation, we use a variety of techniques, some of which are combined.
Pitanguy Method
In the Pitanguy method, part of the cartilage of the outer ear is removed, bringing the ear closer to the head.
This technique is often used when the auricle (concha) is very prominent.

Converse’s method
In the Converse technique, the ear cartilage is carefully incised and then reshaped.
This method is particularly suitable for firm or thick cartilage that is difficult to shape using other techniques.

Mustarde’s method
In this method, the desired ear fold is shaped using fine, permanent stitches.
The sutures reshape the cartilage to create a new anhelix fold, making the ear lie more naturally.

The Stenström Method
In the Stenström technique, the ear cartilage is gently roughened. This makes it more flexible, allowing it to naturally bend into a new shape.
This creates a smooth antihelix fold, causing the ear to lie closer to the head.

• No visible scars on the front of the ear

How long does an otoplasty take?
The procedure usually takes 60 to 90 minutes and can generally be performed on an outpatient basis.
Will the surgery be performed under general anesthesia?
In children, the surgery is often performed under general anesthesia.
In adults, treatment is often possible under local anesthesia with twilight sleep.
Will there be visible scars after the surgery?
The incisions are made behind the ear, so the scars are barely visible later on
How long does a bandage need to be worn?
After the surgery, a head bandage is worn for a few days.
Afterward, it is recommended to wear an elastic headband for about 2–3 weeks, especially at night.
When will I be socially acceptable again?
Mild swelling or bruising may occur in the first few days.
Most patients are able to resume their normal social activities after 7–10 days.
When will we be able to play sports again?
Light exercise is usually possible after 2–3 weeks.
Contact sports should be avoided for about 4–6 weeks.
Are the results permanent?
Yes. The results of otoplasty are generally long-lasting, as the shape of the ear is surgically corrected.
