Ear Pinning: What Methods Are Available? A Selection
Ear Pinning Surgery (Otopexy) – Naturally Flowing Ears
Protruding ears are a common congenital variation. Many people find them bothersome or feel self-conscious because of them. Otoplasty is a proven, minimally invasive surgical procedure that harmonizes the shape of the ear and brings the auricle closer to the head.
At our practice, treatment is tailored to each individual, as every ear is shaped differently. Depending on the patient’s anatomy, we use a variety of techniques, some of which are combined.
Correcting a saddle nose – Reconstructing the bridge of the nose using rib cartilage or ear cartilage
A saddle nose refers to a depression in the bridge of the nose, causing the nose to appear flattened or sunken when viewed in profile. In addition to the aesthetic change, functional problems with nasal breathing may also occur.
In modern nose surgery (rhinoplasty), a saddle nose can often be corrected by augmenting the bridge of the nose with the patient’s own cartilage, particularly rib cartilage.
This method allows for a stable and long-lasting reconstruction of the nasal structure.
Ear cartilage or rib cartilage in nose surgery—which is better?
In some cases of nose surgery (rhinoplasty), simply reshaping the bone or existing nasal cartilage is not enough. In certain situations, additional cartilage must be used to stabilize or reconstruct the nose.
In modern nasal surgery, the patient’s own cartilage is usually used for this purpose. These grafts are most commonly taken from:
• the outer ear (auricular cartilage)
• a rib (costal cartilage)
Many patients therefore ask themselves:
Which type of cartilage is better suited for rhinoplasty—ear cartilage or rib cartilage?
