{"id":7400,"date":"2025-08-23T11:17:04","date_gmt":"2025-08-23T11:17:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.almeida-aesthetic.com\/blog\/btx-what-is-it-and-how-does-it-actually-work\/"},"modified":"2025-08-23T11:17:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-23T11:17:04","slug":"btx-what-is-it-and-how-does-it-actually-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.almeida-aesthetic.com\/en\/blog\/btx-what-is-it-and-how-does-it-actually-work\/","title":{"rendered":"BTX-What is it and how does it actually work?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4><strong>How Botox works<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Botox is the trade name for botulinum toxin type A, a protein obtained from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Its mechanism of action can be described in three steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. attachment to the nerve cell<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Botox binds specifically to nerve endings that are responsible for transmitting signals to muscles.<br \/>\nBlockade of signal transmission<br \/>\nThe nerve normally releases the messenger substance acetylcholine, which tells the muscle: &#8220;Contract!&#8221;.<br \/>\nBotox cleaves an important transport protein (SNAP-25) and thus prevents acetylcholine from being released.<br \/>\nConsequence<br \/>\nThe muscle no longer receives a &#8220;contraction command&#8221; &#8211; it relaxes.<br \/>\nThis lasts until the nerve has formed new endings (usually 3-6 months).<\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. how Botox is broken down in the body (metabolization)<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Botox does not travel far: it remains locally bound to the injected nerve cells.<br \/>\nProtein breakdown: As it is a protein, it is gradually broken down into small peptide pieces and amino acids by the body&#8217;s own enzymes.<br \/>\nRecycling: The body can use these amino acids again to build up other proteins.<br \/>\nNo &#8220;classic&#8221; liver or kidney degradation: Unlike drugs, Botox is not first passed into the blood to be &#8220;detoxified&#8221; there &#8211; the degradation mainly takes place directly in the nerve cells and in the surrounding tissue.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>3. does body temperature have an influence?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Normal fluctuations (36-38 \u00b0C) have no noticeable influence on the effect or shelf life of Botox in the body.<br \/>\nExtreme temperatures (e.g. high fever, severe hypothermia) could theoretically change the metabolism in the cells, which influences the regeneration of nerve endings &#8211; in practice, however, this effect is hardly clinically relevant.<br \/>\nMore important is the temperature during storage before injection: Botox must be cooled, as it loses its protein structure at room temperature or heat and becomes ineffective.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>In short:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Botox locally blocks the release of acetylcholine, is then enzymatically broken down into its protein building blocks and leaves the body not as &#8220;poison&#8221; but as normal amino acids.
